Premarital Counseling in Oklahoma
Premarital counseling that asks the real questions
Anyone can hand you a workbook about love languages. We sit with you and your partner and ask the questions most couples avoid until year five, when they are a lot more expensive to answer.
The Difference
The questions nobody else will ask you
Most premarital programs are a formality. A quiz you click through for the certificate, or a curriculum about communication styles that never gets near the things marriages actually break on. Ours is built the other way around. Four sessions, structured around the conversations that matter, with a licensed clinician who is not afraid of your answers. Questions like:
What is your actual debt, to the dollar, and does your partner know the number?
Is kids or no kids a preference or a dealbreaker, and are you quietly planning to change their mind?
When your family criticizes your partner, whose side does your body pick?
Who carries the mental load now, and who are you each assuming will carry it once you are married?
What happens to this relationship if one of you changes? Faith, health, desire, ambition, identity?
How do the two of you repair after a fight, and does it actually work, or does one of you just go quiet?
You do not have to have the answers yet. That is the whole point of doing this before the wedding instead of after.
How It Works
Four sessions, in an order that matters
Each session is 60 minutes with the same clinician, held through secure telehealth anywhere in Oklahoma. The sequence is deliberate. Money comes before sex. Family of origin comes before kids. Each conversation builds the trust the next one needs.
Money and the machinery of a shared life
Full financial honesty. Debt, credit, spending styles, merged or separate accounts, and the money stories you each inherited from the homes you grew up in.
Family of origin and loyalty
What marriage looked like where each of you came from, the patterns you are repeating or running from, in-laws, holidays, boundaries, and what happens when family and partner collide.
Kids, roles, and the mental load
Children as a decision instead of an assumption. Parenting expectations, careers and whose work bends, and who actually runs the invisible operating system of the household.
Intimacy, change, and staying chosen
Desire, connection, what you will do when life changes one of you, how you repair, and the commitments you are actually making to each other. Your certificate of completion is issued at the end of this session.
The Oklahoma Bonus
Your marriage license drops from $50 to $5.
Oklahoma rewards couples who do this work. Under state law (43 O.S. § 5.1), couples who complete at least four hours of premarital counseling with a qualified provider pay a reduced fee for their marriage license. Our four session format satisfies the requirement, and when you finish, we issue the signed original certificate your court clerk requires. Some counties ask that the certificate be dated within six months of your license application, so plan your sessions inside that window.
Who This Is For
Every couple building a life together
This is clinical premarital counseling with a licensed mental health professional, not a religious program. Couples of any faith or no faith are welcome. We work with:
- LGBTQIA+ couples
- Interfaith and intercultural couples
- Second marriages and blended families in the making
- Couples marrying young and couples marrying late
- Couples who do not fit anyone's template, which is most couples
Your relationship does not need to look like anyone else's to be worth investing in.
If Something Bigger Comes Up
The questions sometimes open doors
Four honest sessions can surface things a workbook never would: a money secret, a family wound, a dealbreaker nobody had said out loud. That is not the program failing. That is the program working, before the wedding instead of after.
When a couple wants to keep going, Demetria Bonds, LMSW picks up right where the package ends. She works with couples across Oklahoma on communication, trust, blended families, and relationships of every shape, including LGBTQIA+ and non-monogamous partnerships. And One More Thing
Yes, we can actually marry you
Funnily enough, our founder Shylah Ridgway, LCSW, LICSW is also an ordained minister registered with the Oklahoma courts. So if you finish your four sessions and realize the only thing missing is someone to officiate, that can be us too, including the short and sweet license signing kind of ceremony.
Every couple, every pairing, no exceptions. Just ask when you reach out.

Questions People Ask
Premarital counseling FAQ
Is premarital counseling required to get married in Oklahoma?
No. Oklahoma does not require premarital counseling. The state offers a reduced marriage license fee as an incentive for couples who complete at least four hours with a qualified provider under 43 O.S. § 5.1.
Do we have to be religious to do premarital counseling?
No. This is clinical premarital counseling with a licensed mental health professional, not a religious program. Couples of any faith or no faith are welcome.
Can we do our sessions online?
Yes, and currently all premarital sessions are online. Secure telehealth reaches every corner of Oklahoma, so you can do your sessions from the couch you already argue on.
How fast can we finish before our wedding?
The state requires a minimum of four hours, which our four 60 minute sessions satisfy. Most couples complete the package in four to six weeks, and we can work with tighter timelines when scheduling allows.
What if the questions bring up something big?
Good. Finding it while it is still small is the entire reason to do this. If your sessions surface deeper work worth doing, your clinician will talk with you about continuing in couples therapy after the package ends. Nothing gets swept under the rug, including the rug.
Can you actually marry us too?
Yes. Mention it when you reach out and we will handle the details with you: Oklahoma requires two adult witnesses at the ceremony, your license has to be used within 30 days of issue, and we return the signed license to your court clerk afterward so nothing falls through the cracks. Ceremonies can be as small as a five minute vow exchange or something more.
How much does premarital counseling cost in Oklahoma?
The complete four session package at Ala Therapy Collective is $650, which includes four 60 minute sessions and the signed certificate that reduces your Oklahoma marriage license fee from $50 to $5. Pay in full at booking, or two payments of $325 with the second due before your third session.
Does insurance cover premarital counseling?
No. Premarital counseling is preventive rather than treatment for a diagnosed condition, so insurance does not apply. It is a private pay service, and we accept all major credit cards, HSA cards, and FSA cards.
