Verify my benefitsDoes HealthChoice cover therapy in Oklahoma? Yes. Here is what it costs.
Every HealthChoice plan covers outpatient mental health in-network. The hard part is finding a practice that actually accepts HealthChoice, has current openings, and treats you like a whole person.
Here is what almost nobody will tell you plainly: HealthChoice does not use a flat copay for therapy. It uses coinsurance, so you pay a percentage of the allowed amount, and your deductible comes first. Some sites publish a single copay figure for HealthChoice therapy. That is not how this plan pays.
- Deductible
- $750 person / $2,000 family
- Out-of-pocket max
- $3,300 person / $8,400 family, network medical
- Deductible
- $1,000 person / $2,750 family
- Out-of-pocket max
- $3,550 person / $8,400 family, network medical
- Deductible
- $1,750 person / $3,500 family, medical and pharmacy combined, and it has to be met before any copay or coinsurance kicks in
- Out-of-pocket max
- $6,000 person / $12,000 family, combined
- Deductible
- $1,000 person / $1,500 family, applied after the plan pays the first $500 of allowed amount
- Out-of-pocket max
- $4,000 person / $9,000 family
- Deductible
- $1,250 person / $1,750 family, applied after the plan pays the first $250 of allowed amount
- Out-of-pocket max
- $4,000 person / $9,000 family
On the High, High Alternative, and High Deductible plans, a specialist office visit is a flat $50 copay. Therapy is not billed that way. Outpatient mental health sits on its own benefit line at 20% coinsurance. Your card is not lying to you exactly. It just is not talking about therapy.
On Basic and Basic Alternative, specialist visits and mental health are both 50% coinsurance, so there is no gap to fall into.
- ✦We verify your HealthChoice benefits before your first session, at no cost. See everything we accept.
- ✦You get your coinsurance and deductible status in writing, not a ballpark. Paying out of pocket instead? Federal law gives you a Good Faith Estimate and we provide it automatically.
- ✦We bill HealthChoice directly, so you are not chasing a claim
- ✦No referral is required from a primary care doctor
- ✦Telehealth is covered at the same plan benefits as in-person. See online therapy in Oklahoma.
- ✦Not sure who you would even see? Start with our network or what to expect.
Every figure above is pulled from the 2026 HealthChoice Summary of Benefits and Coverage documents published by the Oklahoma Employees Group Insurance Division, coverage period January 1 through December 31, 2026. Pull your own plan's SBC at oklahoma.gov. An SBC is a summary and the plan handbook governs, plan year figures change, and your deductible status changes all year long, which is exactly why we verify yours directly before you book.
About visit 21
HealthChoice requires preauthorization for outpatient mental health after your first 20 visits. If the authorization is not filed, benefits can be reduced by 10% or denied outright.
Twenty visits is about five months of weekly therapy. Which means a lot of people run straight into this right around the time the work is finally getting somewhere, and they find out from a bill instead of from a person.
It applies to every HealthChoice plan. High, High Alternative, Basic, Basic Alternative, and the High Deductible plan all carry the same requirement. Ask about it before you start anywhere, not just here. More on how we run intake and billing on our what to expect and insurance pages.

Every clinician here has a bird. Shylah's is the secretary bird, which spends its entire day stomping venomous snakes flat. We think about that a lot while reading insurance documents.

Therapy for Oklahoma teachers, state employees, and public servants
HealthChoice is the plan for Oklahoma's public sector. Nobody went into public education for the money. The insurance is genuinely one of the good parts. Use it.
If you teach, work for a state agency, work in local government, or serve in a role that earned you these benefits, you already know what it takes out of you. We see that load constantly: burnout, workplace stress, compassion fatigue, the weight of caring for everyone else, and the transitions that come with a long career in public service. Therapy is part of the compensation you earned. You do not have to wait until you are running on empty to use it. See anxiety and depression and trauma therapy.
One piece people forget: HealthChoice runs through higher education too, and covered dependents are covered here the same as you are. If you work at a university and your kid is in the middle of a rough semester, they can use this plan. Kenzie works with college students and young adults, which is a stretch of life where "just power through it" stops working and nobody tells you what to do instead.
You likely have HealthChoice if you are:
- ✦An Oklahoma state employee working at least 30 hours per week, or 1,000 hours per year
- ✦An education employee working at least 20 hours per week and eligible for the Oklahoma Teachers Retirement System
- ✦A local government employee working at least 1,000 hours per year
- ✦Someone elected by popular vote
- ✦A retiree. HealthChoice covers active and retired employees alike
- ✦The spouse or covered dependent of any of the above
More than 186,000 Oklahomans are on a HealthChoice plan. Your ID card is a combined medical and pharmacy card with group number 76415077. If you see that number, you are in the right place.
We're online in all 77 counties
HealthChoice covers school districts, county offices, and state agencies in every corner of this state. Most in-network therapy practices sit in Oklahoma City or Tulsa, which has never once helped a school counselor in Guymon. We see clients by secure telehealth from the panhandle to Idabel, from Alva to Ardmore, and everywhere that shows up on a map as a name and one stoplight. Our physical office is at 10344 Greenbriar Parkway in Oklahoma City if you would rather come in. Everything else runs through telehealth, which means the drive is no longer part of your treatment plan.
In the Tulsa area there is one more option: Neurodivergent IRL, our outdoor walk-and-talk program, for people whose brains do their best work while moving.
Oklahoma law sets timeframes for how long a HealthChoice member should wait for a network provider. If you cannot find one who can see you inside the timeframes in Title 36 O.S. § 6060.11, call HealthChoice Customer Care at 800-323-4314, TTY 711. If they cannot find you a network provider accepting appointments in time, they are required to help you locate an eligible out-of-network provider.
We are in-network and taking HealthChoice clients statewide, so hopefully you never need this. Most people have no idea it exists.
Your HealthChoice clinicians
Three of our clinicians are in-network with HealthChoice and accepting new clients. Each brings different strengths, so we can match you on purpose. If none of them look like your person, see the whole network or the Aviary, and tell us what you are looking for.

HealthChoice therapy questions
Does HealthChoice cover therapy in Oklahoma?
Yes. Every HealthChoice health plan covers outpatient mental health in-network, including individual therapy, trauma-focused therapy, EMDR, and telehealth anywhere in Oklahoma.
How much will I pay per session?
HealthChoice uses coinsurance, not a flat copay, and your deductible comes first. For 2026 that is 20% coinsurance on High, High Alternative, and the High Deductible plan, and 50% coinsurance on Basic and Basic Alternative.
So the honest answer is that it depends on your plan and how much of your deductible you have already burned through this year. If a site quoted you one flat copay for HealthChoice therapy, that is not how this plan pays. We pull your exact benefits before your first appointment and give you the number in writing.
My card says specialist visits are $50. Does that cover therapy?
No, and this is the mix-up we see most. On the High, High Alternative, and High Deductible plans, a specialist office visit is a flat $50 copay. Outpatient mental health is billed on its own benefit line at 20% coinsurance instead. On Basic and Basic Alternative, both run at 50% coinsurance, so there is no gap there.
Your card is not lying to you exactly. It just is not talking about therapy.
Does HealthChoice limit how many sessions I can have?
There is no hard cap, but there is a preauthorization requirement. HealthChoice requires preauthorization for outpatient mental health after your first 20 visits, on every plan. Without it, benefits can be reduced by 10% or denied.
Twenty visits is roughly five months of weekly sessions, so it arrives sooner than people expect. Ask any practice you are considering how they handle it.
Which clinicians take HealthChoice?
Three: Shylah Ridgway, Madison Johnson, and Kenzie Langford. All three are accepting new HealthChoice clients. We match you based on what you are working on, your schedule, and your preferences.
Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor?
No. No HealthChoice plan requires a referral to see an in-network mental health provider. You can book directly with us.
Do you offer telehealth for HealthChoice members?
Yes. HealthChoice covers telehealth at the same plan benefits as an in-person visit when you see a network provider. We see clients across all 77 counties, which matters if the nearest in-network therapist is an hour and a half away.
What if I can't find any in-network provider with an opening near me?
Oklahoma law sets timeframes for network provider access under Title 36 O.S. § 6060.11. If HealthChoice Customer Care cannot find you a network provider accepting appointments within those timeframes, they are required to help you locate an eligible out-of-network provider. Customer Care is 800-323-4314, TTY 711.
We are in-network and taking HealthChoice clients statewide, so hopefully this stays theoretical for you.
Can I use HealthChoice for EMDR therapy?
Yes. EMDR bills like any other outpatient therapy session with an in-network clinician, so it runs under your standard outpatient mental health benefit. Shylah and Kenzie are both EMDR trained.
Can I use HealthChoice for ADHD therapy?
Yes. HealthChoice covers therapy for ADHD and everything that trails behind it: executive dysfunction, emotional regulation, and the particular grief of a late diagnosis.
Does HealthChoice cover couples therapy?
It depends on what is being treated. Insurance pays for the treatment of a diagnosable mental health condition for a covered member, so relationship work often gets billed differently than individual therapy, or is not covered at all. That is true of most plans, not just HealthChoice.
We tell you which side of that line your situation falls on before you book, so nobody finds out from a claim denial. See couples therapy and premarital counseling, which is self-pay by design.
What about ADHD, autism, or a late diagnosis?
All covered under your outpatient mental health benefit. See ADHD and neurodivergent care, autism, and AuDHD. In the Tulsa area we also run Neurodivergent IRL, outdoor walk-and-talk therapy.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
It depends on which clinician fits best and what their schedule looks like. When we follow up, we give you realistic timing instead of leaving you guessing.
Can I choose my therapist?
Yes. If you have someone in mind, tell us and we honor it. If you do not, we recommend the best fit based on your goals, schedule, and style.
What if my first therapist is not the right fit?
You can switch. Fit matters more than anything, so if it is not clicking, tell us and we re-match you. No awkwardness required.
Do you have evening appointments?
Some of our clinicians do. Tell us your scheduling needs on the contact form and we match you with someone who fits.
Can my spouse and kids use HealthChoice here too?
Yes, as long as they are covered dependents on a HealthChoice plan. We see adults, college students, and teens. Each person is verified and booked individually, and each has their own deductible and their own visit count.
College students are worth calling out. If you work in higher education or for the state and your student is on your plan, they can use it here, including from campus by telehealth. Kenzie Langford does most of that work.
I'm not sure I have HealthChoice. How do I check?
Look at your insurance card. If it says HealthChoice and the group number is 76415077, you are a HealthChoice member. Still unsure? Send a photo of the front of your card through the contact form and we will confirm it.
Are you taking new HealthChoice clients right now?
Yes. Shylah, Madison, and Kenzie all have current openings, in person and virtual. Submit the contact form and we will be in touch.
Not about insurance? Start at online therapy in Oklahoma, meet the network, or read what to expect.
Ready to use the benefits you already earned?
