The Short Answer

Does UnitedHealthcare cover therapy in Oklahoma?

Yes. Most UnitedHealthcare plans cover outpatient mental health therapy in Oklahoma, including online sessions. Under federal mental health parity law, UnitedHealthcare is required to cover mental health benefits at the same level as medical and surgical benefits.

We're in-network with UnitedHealthcare commercial and Medicare Advantage plans for outpatient mental health. Your sessions are billed directly to your plan and you only owe your copay or coinsurance, never the full session fee.

What "in-network" actually means for you: lower out-of-pocket cost, no claim paperwork, no waiting for reimbursement. We handle the billing. You show up to therapy.

One Company, Several Names

UnitedHealthcare, Optum, UMR, and what's on your card.

UnitedHealth Group is the parent company, and the name on your card or your mental health paperwork can be one of several. If you see any of these, you're in the right place. We verify which one applies to you before your first session.

UnitedHealthcare

The main commercial and Medicare Advantage plans. If your card says UnitedHealthcare or UHC, we're in-network for outpatient therapy.

Optum

Optum administers behavioral health for UnitedHealthcare and other plans. If your card or welcome materials say Optum, Optum Behavioral Health, or Live and Work Well, your therapy benefits run through Optum and we're in-network.

UMR

UMR is a UnitedHealthcare company that administers self-funded employer plans on the UnitedHealthcare network. If your card says UMR, we can verify your benefits and bill your plan directly.

United Behavioral Health (UBH)

The behavioral health arm that runs mental health benefits across UnitedHealthcare plans, operating under the Optum umbrella. If you see UBH on a referral or authorization, that's us covered.

Real Numbers

What UnitedHealthcare therapy actually costs.

Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your specific plan, your deductible status, and whether your plan has a copay or coinsurance structure. Here's how we handle it.

Your cost depends on your plan

UnitedHealthcare plans vary. Some clients pay nothing per session. Others pay a copay. Plans with coinsurance or unmet deductibles cost more.

We tell you the exact number

Before your first session, we verify your specific plan and tell you what each session will cost. No surprises, no promises we can't keep.

What we check before you start

When we run your benefits with UnitedHealthcare, Optum, or UMR, we confirm:

  • Whether your plan covers outpatient therapy
  • Your deductible and how much is left
  • Your copay or coinsurance per session
  • Whether you need a referral from your PCP

You get the numbers in writing before you commit to anything.

Common Questions

What people ask about UnitedHealthcare and therapy.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover online therapy in Oklahoma?

Yes. Most UnitedHealthcare plans cover telehealth therapy at the same rate as in-person sessions. We're a fully online practice across Oklahoma, so every session with us is telehealth.

My card says Optum, not UnitedHealthcare. Are you still in-network?

Yes. Optum administers behavioral health benefits for UnitedHealthcare and many other plans. If your card or welcome materials say Optum, Optum Behavioral Health, or Live and Work Well, your therapy benefits run through Optum and we're in-network. Send us your member ID and we'll confirm your specific plan.

My card says UMR. Can you take that?

Yes. UMR is a UnitedHealthcare company that administers self-funded employer plans on the UnitedHealthcare network. Because every employer's UMR plan is built differently, your exact coverage depends on your plan, so we verify your specific benefits before your first session and tell you what you'll owe.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

For most UnitedHealthcare plans, no. PPO and most Choice Plus and Options plans don't require a referral to see a mental health provider. Some HMO plans may require one from your primary care physician. We'll confirm this when we run your benefits.

How many sessions does UnitedHealthcare cover?

Most current UnitedHealthcare plans don't have a hard cap on outpatient therapy sessions as long as treatment is medically necessary. Some plans have annual limits. We'll check yours during benefits verification.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover EMDR?

Yes. EMDR is billed under standard psychotherapy CPT codes and is covered like any other outpatient therapy session under your UnitedHealthcare plan.

What if my plan isn't in-network?

If we find during verification that your specific plan isn't in our network, we'll tell you upfront. You can still see us using your out-of-network benefits if your plan has them, and we'll provide superbills for reimbursement. If insurance isn't going to work, we have self-pay and limited sliding scale options. See our Insurance page for details.

Do you accept UnitedHealthcare Medicaid or SoonerCare plans?

No. Ala Therapy Collective does not accept Medicaid, including any carrier's Medicaid product. We're in-network with UnitedHealthcare commercial and Medicare Advantage plans, not Medicaid or SoonerCare. If your plan is a Medicaid plan, contact us and we'll point you toward in-network options.

UnitedHealthcare commercial and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan are not the same plan

UnitedHealthcare runs both commercial plans and, in some markets, a Medicaid plan called UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. They share a name but they are different products. We accept UnitedHealthcare commercial and Medicare Advantage plans. We do not accept Medicaid or SoonerCare, through UnitedHealthcare or any other carrier.

Quick tells you are looking at a Medicaid or SoonerCare card, which we cannot take:

  • Says "Community Plan," "SoonerSelect," or "SoonerCare" anywhere on the card
  • Lists a Medicaid ID rather than a commercial Member ID
  • Shows your assigned PCP name and phone on the front

If your card just says UnitedHealthcare, UHC, Optum, or UMR with a commercial plan type, that is the kind of plan we verify and bill. Not sure which you have? Send a photo of the front of your card through our contact form and we'll confirm.
