Does Optum cover therapy?
In most cases, yes. Optum is the behavioral health arm of UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare. When you have a UnitedHealthcare, Oxford, or UMR plan, the medical side is run by the carrier and the therapy side is administered by Optum. Same coverage, a different name on the behavioral part.
The large majority of commercial plans in that family include outpatient mental health, and that is where therapy lives. What changes from one plan to the next is the cost and the fine print: your copay, your coinsurance, whether you have met your deductible, and whether your plan needs anything on file before you begin. That is exactly what we check for you.
One thing to flag up front. We do not bill Medicaid, so the UnitedHealthcare Community Plan Medicaid products are not part of what we accept. More on that in the questions below.
Your cost is set by your plan, not by us
There is no single price to post here. Two people with UnitedHealthcare can pay different amounts for the same session, depending on how their plans are built. These are the pieces that decide your share:
- Your copay, the set amount some plans charge per session
- Your coinsurance, the percentage some plans ask you to cover
- Your deductible, and whether you have met it yet this plan year
- Your plan type, whether PPO, Choice Plus, or another network
- Whether your plan needs anything on file before sessions begin

Why does my card say UnitedHealthcare but I keep seeing Optum?

What will it cost?

Do you take UnitedHealthcare Community Plan or other Medicaid plans?
No. Ala Therapy Collective does not bill Medicaid, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan covers Texas Medicaid programs like STAR, STAR Kids, STAR+PLUS, and CHIP. If your card shows one of those, we cannot bill it. Reach out anyway and we will point you toward other options.
